http://www.learninghydro.org
Old trash cans and barrels can be composters.
Composting of hydroponic waste and garden cuttings does not require purchased composters. Do not waste money on the machines and devices on the market.
I have much waste from my garden, my orchard, the weeds, dead squirrels, whatever wanders onto the property and poops, or dies.
For example, rock wool disappears into the composted mass of leaves, fruit, twigs. Chop it up with a shovel. Why put rock wool in the city trash? After use in hydroponics, the scrap rock wool can become an excellent soil amendment.
In this video, I show three simple devices --- a 40 gallon barrel with both ends cut out, three barrels interlocked to make a tube, and a short section of a 40 gallon barrel. All function as high-efficiency composters.
Commercial composters feature air venting, access doors, rotating axels, screw on lids, computerized thermostats --- all a waste of money.
Worms live in the dark. They flourish in semi-wet organic debris. Make an environment for the worms and the worms will reduce all the organic debris to worm sludge -- which costs money at garden supply shops.
I used discarded lids on the tubes. Keep the compost moist. This dark, wet environment will produce the organic materials to sludge. The tubes do not need air holes --- do worms have windows underground?
I show the low-tech modification of the first composter. I found this barrel behind the HydroSuppliers shop. A $30 Black and Decker sabre saw cuts the plastic. I fill it with trashed oranges, then add a few shovels of worm-populated compost from another tube. A discarded Rubbermaid trash can lid closes the tube.
The second composter shows what remains when the stack is not watered. Hundreds of oranges and leaves decayed to nothing, but the sticks remained. And the most recent trash dropped in the top remain intact. Keep the stack wet, the bacteria and worms will eat the debris fast.
The last composter featured here actually reduced the material to sludge and sand. I watered this composter every day or so. A lid on top kept the debris wet. Several loads of leaves and oranges went into this short cylinder. And I threw sifted yard dirt on the debris. Finally, the cylinder filled.
This sludge is too rich to put on gardens -- it hardens like asphalt. The sludge must be mixed with soil and spread out over the earth.
Worms and other insects consume the debris. I show four types of insects I found in the compost. Standard red worms, maggots, cut worms, and the larvae of June Bugs. All serve to reduce the waste to carbon and nitrogen.
